ATENAS
15 minute drive
Atenas is the fifth canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 127.19 square kilometers (49.11 sq mi) and has a population of 27,112 (estimate as of 2013). It is popularly said that Atenas enjoys the ‘best climate in the world’; the reason for this attribution is that climatic factors like temperature and humidity are stable all year round, with temperatures ranging from 19 Celsius at night to 34 Celsius during the day with a yearly average of 26 Celsius. It is a fairly compact canton, mountainous for the most part. Atenas has a robust expat community, community events, lots of great restaurants and supermarkets, a weekly produce market, and great schools.
CIUDAD COLON

Mora is the 7th canton (or county) in the province of San José, Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 162.04 km², and has a population of 23,004. The Río Virilla establishes the northern boundary of the canton, with the Río Grande de Tárcoles delineating its far western limit. The Río Chucás, Quebrada Grande, Río Viejo and Río Tabarcia mark the canton’s western boundary; the Río Jorco, Río Tabarcia and Río Negro, the southern limit; and a series of foothills rising into the Cerros de Escazú delineate the canton’s eastern border. Ciudad Colon is a charming area with a wonderful arts center, UN Univeristy of Peace, a weekly organic produce market, and a multicultural community.


OROTINA

Orotina is the 9th canton of the province of Alajuela. Due to its geographical position, the canton is located in the Central Pacific Region. It limits to the east with Atenas, to the north with San Mateo, to the south with Garabito and Turrubares, and to the west with Esparza. Orotina has great productive wealth in its soils. The large and varied production of fruit trees is notable (pineapple, melon, watermelon, avocado, cashew, guanábano, mango, jocote, mamón, papaya, zapote, orange, banana, lemon, pejibaye, caimito, tamarind, mandarin, nance, etc.) , which has made the canton famous, organizing an International Fruit Fair every year. ALAJUELA

Alajuela is the first canton of the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica. It is located in the Central Valley of the country. It limits to the east with the cantons of Sarapiquí, Heredia, Belén and Santa Bárbara, to the south with Santa Ana and Mora, to the west with Atenas, Grecia, Poás and Sarchí, and to the north with the Río Cuarto Canton. The main axis of the canton is the city of Alajuela, the second most populous city in the country after the national capital, San José. Alajuela has the main airport in Costa Rica, the Juan Santamaría International Airport, named in the honor of the national hero born in Alajuela. The area has hospitals, schools, universities, banks, stores, nightlife, and more.


ESCAZÚ

Escazú is the second canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The canton lies west of the San José Canton and its whole territory is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area. The canton was one of the earliest established in the country, in December 7, 1848. As the metropolitan area has expanded Escazú has become a suburban area on the west side of the national capital city of San José. It is delineated by the Río Tiribí on its northern border. The peak of Cerro Cedral in the Cerros de Escazú marks the southern limit of the canton. According to a 2012 United Nations Development Programme, Escazú ranks as the 4th highest canton in Costa Rica in so far as human development. The area is inhabited primarily by upper-mid to high income families and known in the Costa Rican collective consciousness as home to the country’s economic elite. Escazú is the wealthiest and most prominent city in the country catering to wealthy Americans and Europeans as well as wealthy locals. The name “Escazú” derives from the indigenous word “Izt-kat-zu”, which means “resting stone”.
SANTA ANA

Santa Ana is the 9th Canton of San José. The city of Santa Ana still maintains its traditional feel of a typical Costa Rican town with its small stores, bars, and restaurants offering local and international cuisine and Sunday fresh fruit and vegetable markets. Nonetheless, Santa Ana has been recently experiencing a real estate and commercial development boom which is unprecedented for the entire Central Valley. It has become the place of choice with upscale grocery stores, gourmet restaurants, banks, gas stations, medical and dental clinics, beauty salons, coffee houses, hotels, private schools, and small commercial centers springing up everywhere. The city itself is within a few minutes of the surging business locale of Lindora, in the Pozos district, adding to the availability of commercial, lodging and residential areas. It limits with the cantons of Alajuela and Belén to the north, the canton of Mora to the west, Escazú to the east and the canton of Mora to the south.
